Healing through touch is a natural human instinct. Indian Head Massage springs from a rich tradition.
Learning Indian Head Massage is a rewarding endeavour that offers numerous benefits. This ancient technique can be a valuable skill for those in the wellness industry, allowing practitioners to offer holistic care to their clients. Additionally, learning Indian Head Massage can personal benefits, helping you to unwind and find balance in your daily life.
Massage has always played an important part in Indian life, featuring in the earliest Ayurvedic texts from nearly 4000 years ago. Babies in India receive a daily massage, infants receive massage once or twice a week and from the age of six children are encouraged to share a massage with other family members. Originally head massage was performed by the women in the family to care for their hair and also practised by barbers offering ‘champi’ (head massage) after a shave or haircut. Our work ‘shampoo’ comes from the same word.
Indian Head Massage was introduced to the west by the osteopath and massage therapist, Narendra Mehta. In the 1970’s he came to London to train as a physiotherapist but was disappointed to find that massage, and especially head massage, did not feature greatly in this discipline. Even when he learned body massage, the head was still not treated as part of the routine.
Mehta decided to formalise the techniques of Indian Head Massage and pass the knowledge on to others. He studied the massage itself and also the effect it had on the clients he was treating.
The routine you will learn is based on the Mehta method. This treatment is done through clothing without oil. However, we have included a section in the manual on oils for massage if you wish to offer the option of using oil on the arms, neck, shoulders and hair.
The general benefits of massage are far reaching:
● Boosts circulation – bringing fresh nutrients and oxygen to cells
● Warms tissues, relaxes tense and contracted muscles, reduces pain and fatigue
● Increases lymphatic flow thus aiding removal of waste products and toxins
● Skin condition improved due to improved circulation and desquamation
● Stimulates or soothes nerve endings depending on massage movement being used
● Reduction of blood pressure and pulse rate
● Relaxing or invigorating for mind and body – depending on client’s need
● Can help relieve symptoms of stress – restores the body to state of ‘rest and repose’
● Can help relieve depression by stimulation of endorphins (feel good hormones).
